Hi,
A refugium is just a tank that's linked to the main system that provides a safe place for copepods etc to breed (hence "refuge&quot. Also depending on what you want it to function as:
1. some people have shrimp etc in there that breed and provide planktonic food for the main system
2. Provides extra capacity for extra biological filtration by incorporating a deep sand bed in the refugium or adding extra live rock in there.
3. Act as nutrient export avenue if you decide to grow lots of macroalgae in there, then clipping the extras when they grow and dumping them out. Also can grow mangroves in refucium to help in nutrient export.
Some refugiums are gravity-fed types, with the refugium located at a location higher than the display tank. I converted part of my sump into a refugium though - no place ouside to hang another one!

Hong Yee
