looks great simon, most have good exposure. if you can move the plant, bring it downstairs and prop it about 3 ft in front of a leafy bush, that will give you a good blurred green background.
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

keke, unlike butterflies, I enjoy shooting indoors for orchids , even though I stay on the ground floor, but moving the plants to position is hard work
yah but then the background not so swee leh.

I have a better way to get the background nicer, but yet stay indoors ;P. need to borrow my company's large format plotter
but just a personal preference, the reason why I chose a monotone background is to make the orchid stand out, most orchid keepers do the same as well. if a grassy background is used, it might have a different effect.
when I find the time, i try your suggestion (I'm awaiting 3 more slipper to bloom )
let me go find the brommie pix I took some time back. the owner was holding it in his hands standing in front of starhub centre, apparently in the middle of no where while me was shooting at close range with two flash and some daylight. public spectable man.
I personally prefer some texture (very blurred ones) in the background rather than plain colour.

Simon, where you mount your flash?
Still like the flash is diffused?
Great exposures for all the pictures... Less the one of the yard... Heh...
Simon, those are great shots of the orchids.
How did your mom managed to get her orchids to flower in the balcony? I keep mine in the HDB common corridor with plenty of sunlight, but only Oncidium sp. blossoms regularly. The Dendrobium and Aranda sp. only sprout new leaves.
hmmm.. I was going to shoot them with a black background
no flash ;P, everything is shot from a tripod then PSed
I believe humidity plays an important role. My mom wets the yard. Den. are no problems, paph are especially happy, even though the temperature isn't too ideal for them. I hate the aranda sp. with their hanging down roots requires alot of water, but the most my mom can give is twice a day
Ah... I understand... Didn't look at your shutter speed closely...
wah ! your mom has a nice collections or is it yours ????
got, i sponser a portion, usually the slippers ;P
Wow, after looking at your pics plus some poisoning from my friend here, I am getting more interested in orchids. A pic of slipper from Mulu, Sarawak to enjoy..

I think to achieve total black have to use flash.

yes, shot at highspeed usually do the trick, but require 2 flash to illuminate the subject
