Sabal waterfall.
Sabal waterfall is located inside a forest reserve near Sarawak-Kalimantan Barat border.

Another hazy day. The whole Borneo island is covered by the haze caused by open burning / forest fire for at least 3 months already.
The rainforest of a forest reserve near the border.
The hardwoods. Got logging activity inside the "protected" forest reserve.

The waterfall. This is my first time to explore this secret garden:
The white tree trunk of Tristania sp.

Unidentified species of wild orchid growing on the rock.
A species of moss growing on the wet rocky surface. Probably Fissidens sp.
Flowers of unidentified species:
There is no fish living in the water at the waterfall except this small shrimp, Macrobrachium sp.

Nice pictures! I love the waterfall and close-ups of the flora and shrimp. I notice the moss in the picture resembles the those I found in a similiar waterfall in Cameron Highlands. I managed to "smuggle" it back to Singapore to see if it will grow emerse or submersed. The emerse ones died in 1 day, I think due mainly to the hot weather unlike the cold climate in the highlands. Those submersed ones which i dumped into my shrimp tanks survive for a few days before turning brown and finally died.
Sad...those moss will look real nice and I think maybe visually nicer than those fissidens we get from hobbyists.

I went into the woods because I wanted to live deliberately. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life... to put to rout all that was not life; and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.

Nice, dang, it's always greener on the other side
Well, I am jealous but the way to solve that is to come there.
So with that in mind:
Here's my excusion into the wilds, well, 90 min drive from home. I found some Bryophytes growing in the waterfall, they look like mosses but are liverworts. I have them in my tanks at home. We will see how they do.
Of interest, a 1000 year old California Juniper about 25 cm tall growing next to the water fall. A jeffery Pine about 300 years old. The water fall in the dry season. See link for the wet season.

And a nice little guy clinging to the near vertical face being a nice little is a red fir, Abies magnifica.
They are about 150 years old here.
There are some white bark pines at about 1000 years as well here.
Natural bonsai. The whit bark pine
the water fall has a series of 3 main cataracts, about 500ft tall.

kuching! super nice excursions ! I wish I could go on trekking trips like those too ! I will try to plan one when I go back to the philippines after this assignment.
hey plantbrain, no fish?
why I don't do garden hybrids and aquarium strains: natural species is a history of Nature, while hybrids are just the whims of Man.

Only the rarest of all Trout and the most beautiful and the CA state fish, the golden trout.
This is Holy Grail of Trout.
Taste great too, especially after 7 days of backpacking without a fresh meal.

I can almost smell the orchids on the cliffs
I think forestry dept. officer allowed them to log because the entrance of that road is the foresty dept of Sarawak branch's office.
Frankly speaking, I do not like forestry dept. because they allow people to log & then when they want to do the reforestation, they plant Acacia tree & other trees which got commercial value. I hate them too.
Humans destroy the beautiful jungle because of $$$. And, they do not care what is the consequences of destroying our forest.

i wouldn't be surprised. same thing happens in sabah.
they plant acacia because they take a few years (<10) before they can be harvested. hardwood takes much longer (30~100 years) so ....
they just want to make a quick buck.
i have seen many jungles being/have been clearcut in just a few short years.

I just got the bad news. Sarawak govt. is planning to build 2 more hydro-electric dams so that our state can "export" electricity to West Malaysia (for $$$). Currently we have Batang Ai dam & Bakun dam is going to complete by 2009. The population in Sarawak is very small, why build so many dam & destroy VERY BIG AREAS of tropical rainforest & kill so many new or rare species of plants & wildlife in the jungle.
I'm really sick of those money minded people.
