    Hi,

    I'm new here. I would like to find out whether star poly reduce nitrate ?

    On behalf of all the moderators in AQ, welcome... and especially to the 'dark side'.. hahahah..

    ok.. star polyps do not really reduce nitrates.. the only marine living tissue that reduces nitrates are macroalgae.. as star polyps are considered as 'animals' in that sense, it does contribute a bit of waste.. but the amt generated is insignificant to those from fishes..

    actually all photosynthesizing corals take in no3. but in very very very minute amts. too much can kill them. those inverts tt photosynthesizes very aggressively like clam take in more no3 then others. no3 is taken in by the microscopic algae(which give the corals their colour pigments) within the tissue of the coral. as u know plants take in no3.therefore the microscopic algae too take in no3 as fertilizers so to speak.
