Normally, I'll stay out of water & go to mountain areas to look for plants during the rainy season which is just started. Since my friend, Alfred (from Europe) is here, then I brought him to catch some interesting fish such as freshwater pipefish.

Alfred is back to Borneo. Good to see him get wet in the water.....

The pipefish is a slow swimmer but yet it is found hiding under the submerged vegetation at the fast flowing water, near the riverbank. This is the habitat:

    Freshwater pipefish, Doryichthys martensii.

Hygrophila sp. (top) and Isoetes sp.

A local invented this fish trap & gave it to my friend as a gift. So, I borrowed this trap & testing it in the river. Fish food is placed inside the trap :

The fish trapped inside is Puntius kuchingensis:

Next location is to collect Parosphromenus sp. from Batang Kayan basin.

Spending a lot of time only caught 2 adult fish......water is too high. It's too hard to collect fish during rainy season.

    Loach, Kottelatlimia pristes:

    Close up:

The male loach has the second pectoral fin ray enlarged:

Last location......(a river where I never visited before) found Crypt. striolata again. A very big area of forest is cleared near the river.....maybe for planting the oil palm.

    Tranquility......

More pictures will be posted soon (for tommorow trip).....

The last picture is really nice! What is the significance of the thickened fin ray?
