The water will get cloudy for a while. Just let the plants kick in. 5 otos is enough, imo. Plus the shrimps, i think its good enough for cycling.
What fish are you intending to get?
Hi guys,
I'm starting to try and cycle my 4ft planted tank
Put in 5 otos and 10 shrimps from Chan on Sunday.
Last couple of days the water a little more cloudy, not sure if it's coz of bacteria bloom (any way to check?)
Anyway I've been reading around and it seems that for a planted tank, 5 otos isn't enough. My otos are doing ok so far, only worry is that not enough algae for them to eat (I don't see any algae at the moment)
question, what other fish can I add, I'm thinking about some corys? don't want to add more otos since I might have to feed them algae tablets or something....Also trying to avoid SAEs if possible....unless I get BBA!

Eventually I'm hoping to have Cardinals, Rummy noses and maybe even some altums (to make the Cardinals school [] ) But for the time being, I just want enough hardy-ish fish to help with cycling....thinking of getting a few Corys for this...

1. no fish deserves to be used for cycling, not even feeders
2. planted tanks don't have much of a problem with cycling as the plants will take up the N
so why not plant the tank first, wait for it to establish, and slowly introduce small numbers of fish?
hth
With plants can start cycling process?? i always thought fishes is the one to start.. now that i know.. yes.. no fishes are suitable for starting.. coz it is very stressful for the fishes..
the other way to start cycling is to use the some used wool from other aquarist.. this will also cut down the cycling time...[]
Let us work together to preserve the world for our children to inherit by being responsible to our surroundings. Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints, bubbles and memories.
yeah, read that heavily planting the tank will help with cycling, too.
that's what i've been practising...
P-L-E-C-O-R-Y=M-A-N-I-A!!! YEAH!
FLORENCE, capital of the region of Tuscany, has a population of around half a million inhabitants, spreads on the banks of the Arno, between the Adriatic and the Tyrrhenian seas, almost in the middle of the Italian peninsula. It is a city which bustles with industry and craft, commerce and culture, art and science.
Ok, my tank has quite a lot of plants. Actually how does the heavy planting help with cycling? Is it able to create the anti-ammonia bacteria without fish?----------------

How do I tell that my tank has fully cycled?
