Is black water necessary for a planted tank ? Understands that it helps to reduce algae growth. Will the black water makes the water brownish ? Can't decide whether to get it.

I use Mr Gan's (supposedly) South American blackwater extract, the staining is not apparent after a few hours.

If you would want to reduce the ph, can be done using CO2. Yes it does reduce algae at lower ph. Have loaded SERA peats, difference is KH down from 7 to 4. PH from 6.8 to 6.6..be careful your ph may drop lower than that if you have CO2 on the whole day; do monitor your ph.

anyway Mr Gan's blackwater seem to make my cardinal much more healthy when they were in a bad patch. Anyway one bottle last so long there's no harm putting lor.

i think the black water or peat extracts are meant for those keeping and breeding soft water fishes like discus, angels, tetras, gouramis, barbs etc.... to reduce the pH and simulate their natural blackwater habitat. With planted tanks, some use it to lower pH (and partly to fight algae, which are said to dislike low pH). But most plants (except crypts) don't thrive in pH below 6 as well, so it's your choice. Also it screws up the KH/pH table used for determining CO2.

Usually back water extract and peat lowers the pH of the water column. Some hobbyist used it together with CO2 injection, but usually, most would prefer not to use it as it tints the water to a brownish shade.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?
