Help! my newly bought second hand eheim 2213 sponge causes the water to turn red! (not blood red... just a light diluted red..)

    • Will it affect the fish health?
    • How can I remove the red colour? w/o changing water?

    Please advise..

    A. remove filter and wash it with hot water.
    B. Water change at 50% every alternate day.
    C. Cross finger and hope no fish dies on you.
    D. Go and complain to the shop you bought and get a replacement or compensation from the distributor.

Second hand? check with the previous owner, he/she should know what is that.

Hang a packet of activated carbon near the filter outlet for a few days. The discoloration should clear up.

In future, it will be advisable to wash the filtration media properly before using. Especially for second hand equipment.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

If you do decide to go ahead to hang the carbon, just make sure you remove it after a week or so.
