February 10, 2007. It was a raining day in southern Sarawak. In this trip, I went to re-visit the habitat of Crypt. x purpurea & I was shocked to find the spathe (flower) of this species for the first time! It is unusual for Crypt. to flower during the rainy season.

Cryptocoryne x purpurea is a natural cross hybrid in between Crypt. cordata variety zonata with ....probably Crypt. longicauda in western Sarawak as both parent plants are found in the nearby area.

It's doesn't look the same with another cross hybrid, Crypt. x purpurea nothovar. borneoensis from Kalimantan of Indonesian Borneo. In Kalimantan, this species is a cross of Crypt cordata var. zonata with Crypt griffithii.

For more info, please check out this link:

Cryptocoryne x purpurea in submerged condition:

The leaves can be green coloured or dark green coloured, depend on the lighting condition, soil & depth of the water.

The spathe looks like Crypt cordata var. zonata except there is no red colouration for C.c.v. zonata:

Don't know it's Nanhaipotamon aculatum or N.hongkongense since both are similar(as what I read) and occur in HK.

I already preserved this male in this pic. Maybe the size is still small or the season is not right, color is different.
