previously I had agassizii 'red gold', the pair spawned but only 2 females from that batch survive, then my male went MIA(presumed dead, since he didnt appear since he's MIA), I had the mother and 2 females for abt 6-8mths, then I discover 1 of the females acted like a male and even had the dorsal extension behind and the colours.. weird.. anyone got any experience?

sex change has been recorded for crenicara punctulata and most of the dicrossus species start life as females and then some will develop into males. i saw a post somewhere on TheKrib for apistos sex change and i believe it happens to them too. when the dominant male dies and leaves behind a harem of females, the dominant female will start to develop male reproductive organs and assume the role of the dominant male. it happens in swordtails too.

there is some articles online about sex changes in checkerboards. in the case of crenicara punctulata it has been confirmed by scientific studies, especially on the reproductive behaviour of this particular species. since the dicrossus species are related to c. punctulata, it could be that they might share the same traits.

Ever since the male apisto (double red)died few months back.(They used to be 1 pair) The female, i noticed, have slowly "change" to look like a male with color and elongated dosal fin.
What a apisto World.? Can't believe it. []

Now, all the Ram keepers hoping their males will change to females...
Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:
A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.
