Chris, here is the 5" jag you gave me. Simply beautiful

Can anyone confirm that this is a "she"?

Saw another LFS selling a 4" one but the owner is asking for too much.

this is a female jag from lsz. the dosal fin is more transulcent than the males. body is rounder too. cant really tell from the pic cos of the overall colour in brown, making the fins look very opaque.
To each her own fish !

I think LSZ's is another species of jags, does the gender characteristic defers from species to species?

Going by the common characteristics of differentiating genders for both SA and CA cichlids, the females would have rounder pectoral fins while the males would have longer and sharper fins, is that correct?

So if that is so, then my jag would be a lady...right?

    jag is only one species.
both pics shown are of same species.
"cichlasoma" managuense or Mannie as affectionally called
Only one species is called jag
there are closely related ones but not called Jag.

posted something abt this before, so i just cut and paste here
    "
the best way to sex most cichlids is to vent them.

but fortunately, for guapotes (jag being the most famous member), you dont have to do that all the time.

(1)Males will be noticeably larger than females of same age.

    (2) females will have a much darker and pronounced black blotch along the lateral line. This is also juvenile colouration for them, and males will lose almost all as they age.

    (3) females in general have less defined markings on any other parts of their bodies, where males take on thicker coloration, and the markings are more evening spread throughout

    (4) male coloration extend strongly to the finnages too , females even when adult have much more dull finnage coloration.

    (5) if you have a sexually matured female, she will have a very full belly.
males will have larger head and finnage, and a longer but not so full body.

    (6) as your fish attain sexual maturity but doesnt have mates, and when breeding time comes, they will spend a lot of time sulking with fins clamped. SOmetimes loss of appetite. This applies for both male and female.

if you can wait till your fish gets to 6" and above, you can sex them pretty reliably.

But not 100% , i once sexed a 5" female as a male and i realised only after she laid eggs... so "outstanding specimens" or crossdressers do occur occasionally. "
