I have some Botia striata that I need to medicate with Metro. The problem is they are extremely elusive in a heavily planted tank with forty Cardinal tetras. I know Cardinals are sensitive to medications, does anybody know if Metronidazole is safe to use with them?

    Thanks.

Metronidazole is usually an good medication for treatment for several protozoan and anaerobic bacterial diseases (e.g Cryptocaryon, Hexamita {hole in head disease}, Ichthyophthirius). This medication does not affect the filtration media and can be easily removed with carbon when the treatment is over.

Usually, loaches will be the more sensitive species when it comes to medication as they are scaleless fauna. As such, medicating the tank with Cardinal Tetras should not be an issue at all. What exactly are you treating the loaches for?

    Good luck with the treatment!

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

Hexamita. An Apisto with them has also developed hole-in-the-head disease.

Hi JRJ, you should not encounter any problems with Metronidazole on cardinals but the Botia striata will require patience. 1 thing to note is your oxygen levels, in a heavily planted tank and fullload of fauna. I have observed the oxygen depletion is quite severe during nightfall and I have to supplement with an airpump. I've enjoyed relative success using salt together with other medications on most loaches, you might want to experiment on that too. Good luck and god speed.
