very simple, females must have a gravid spot (some times pale brown some times very dark) and males must have a gonopodium, basically looks like a penis.
Hi Folks,
I am not good with fishes, need some enlightenment.
Recently, bought some guppies from NA. These are very different type which I usually sees. According to the boss, it is American type of guppies. They were sold as a pair of female and male at $14
I notice, one female guppy starts changing itself to look more like the male. In fact it nows has color of the male guppy. When I bought them 2 weeks ago it was plain and without color and was suppose to be the female one. Not sure is this normal that they changes (sex)?
Anyone knows why?

i did heard of fish changing sex... but only in cases of something great like a need for mating or stuff... but i not sure if guppy changes sex.

Hi hwchoy,
sorry, dunno don't know the term but I observe it. I remember it has a black spot thing near the bottom (toward rear) of its belly. But now the entire body and tail is looking like the male one except color a little pale.
Hi,
I bought it from NA twice they are always kept in the 3 ft tank just on your right when you enter the shop. Not many. But really very beautiful and not large. I don;t like guppy but for this I cannot resist.

Hi,
The puzzling thing here is these 'american' species i got has colors on the entire fish from head to tail and the once colorless plain female is getting the full color of the male one. Really strange, let me observe. Its kind of getting interesting today. One is this changing 'sex' guppy (only one out of the others) AND saw this funny looking creature in my office tank! (I posted it on another thread).
My eyes playing trick or what?

Ah... I see...
Not sure if the "female" is a non matured male when in the shop, after buying, it starts to mature and starts developing into a male.
