I for fish pictures ok, can angle a bit and the reflection is gone. For direct tank pictures like for ADA competition, that's not possible as the built in flash is fixed. A small black card can be taped to prevent/reduce the reflection.

You can configure the built-in flash not to fire. See my previous post.

Sorry, I think I was not 100% correct. According to the manual, the built-in flash will not fire but it will send out timing pre-flash to trigger the remote flash :-( I did not notice it when I used this feature.
I think the Canon ST-E2 is better in this aspect.

Option 22 is for the D80. I am not sure if it is the same for other model.
Also you need to turn on full menu to see the option.

slight angling is only good if you are far from the tank. for small fish you are very close and you don't really want to angle, the distortion is very significant.
wonder if any one has tried commander mode in this physical configuration.

Yes, I noticed this distortion when angling was very bad when I was taking pix of my baby CRS. [3mm size!]

at macro distance you have to shoot straight into the glass. so the technique to track fish at macro distance is also unlike when you are 5 ft away, which is basically you can pivot the camera. can macro distance you have to shift the camera body while tracking, always keeping the lens perpendicular to the glass.

    Thanks for the tip Choy!

So you rock to the left and right to follow small darting fish or have a sideways track or chair on rollers?

The pre-flash from the built-in flash for commanding the slave flashes can be captured in the reflection if shot straight on. There is a attachment for block this pre-flash that comes with the SB-R1 macro set. Alternatively, you may try using a strip of exposed film to cover the built-in flash, it will block the visible spectrum leaving just the IR for commanding the slaves.

Shooting at an angle will help to avoid capturing the pre-flash. However, you will get a little distortion and astigmitism.
