    Here's another newbie questions for the experts...

    What I've found out so far:

    1) riccia bubbles when the tank is saturated in oxygen;
    2) at night, plants and fish need oxygen and both produce carbon dioxide;

    That being the case, would it make sense for me to use an air pump (through a timer) to fill the fish tank with oxygen at night (even at the expense of reducing the CO2) present and then turn on my CO2 & lights in the daytime? It seems to me that this method will be healthier for both the fish and the plants.

    toledosun.. it all depends on whether your fishes behaviour in the morning. Observe them in the morning and see whether they are gasping for air at the surface of the water. If they are gasping for air then you properly need an airstone as there is either too much fish load or the oxygen content produce by the plants during the lights 'on' time is not enough to last the whole night. Happy planting!![]

    Sounds logical to me.

    But why waste electricity powering the pump if really not that necessary? Just observe the fish in the morning. If they are not stressed and at the surface gasping for air, that means the O2 content in the tank is sufficient.

    For me, I used DIY CO2 and it is running day and night. The fish seem OK too. I did not use air pump.
