What is the biggest fish possible for a 4 foot planted tank? If we throw convention out of the window, could a fish like a motoro be kept in one?

Motoro? Planted tank? Where to park?

Seriously. Rays live in open areas with little obstruction, don't think they appreciate plants rocks and wood.

I would have to agree with bryan on that.

In a planted tank, the space available for fauna is around the mid to top section of the water column. As such, I would prefer arowanas to other fishes.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

Been thinking of setting one for my dad's house, but I always never liked the idea of having arrowanas since they are a particular fussy fish (funny thing for a species that is of an acient order that have not change greatly for millions of years). Any other giants to recommend? I had a liking for oscars but they are known to be very opinionated interior designers.

Big cichlids are pretty much out of the question. As you've pointed out, most of them are opinionated interior designers.

Perhaps a giant gourami? Although not many would appreciate it's beauty.

Frankly I'm rather uncomfortable with anything above 12" for a 4FT.
Most of the big guys are either vandals, murderers or love veggies.

getting a group of 6-8 discus would be perfect for a planted tank imo, or if you want something that requires less care try fullgrown angels? i have a particular soft spot for these regal south american cichlids =)

My vote goes for a school of Scatophagus argus var. 'red'. Easy to maintain. Grows to dinner plate size. But more or less the only plants compatible with them would be Java fern.

I think that fish would wipe out his tank mate on any given buffet. I heard they are quite greedy.

Eh... I think these guys are not suitable for a planted. I may be wrong though..

For the Channa species, the only one I'd keep in a planted would be Channa bleheri, the Rainbow Dwarf Snakehead.

In the case of a 4-ft planted, I'd just keep a shoal of large adult Discus instead of one BIG Arowana. Alot more action in the tank than to see one big giant hogging all the swimming space.
