Last Sunday, I was hiking with my cousin to the summit of Gunung Ampungan (2,476 feet). I was surprised to find so many insects which I never seen before in this area although the forests here are disturbed caused by farming & logging activity.

    The scenery near the summit:

    The plain at Batang Krang:

    Gunung Semuja Tamiang:

In between 1,500 to 2,200 feet, I found a lot of Nepenthes reinwardtiana growing on the slope. Below than that, I can't find any single N. reinwardtiana.

The small pitcher of Nepenthes reinwardtiana :

Nepenthes reinwardtiana has 2 spots on the inner surface of the pitcher.

Even though N. mirabilis is found growing together with N. reinwardtiana, I couldn't find the cross hybrid in between this 2 species. Strange.... The lowland species such as N. ampullaria & N. gracilis are uncommon above 1,500 feet. There is no N. rafflesiana at all.

    Nepenthes mirabilis

    Terrestrial orchid, Nervilia sp.

Vrydagzynea tristriata (orchid). First time found this species outside limestone forest!

    Wild orchid - Nephylaphyllum beccarii

Found this beautiful jewel orchid again! (Anoectochilus sp.)

The giant tree fern (Cyathea sp.) is very common in altitude above 1,000 feet.

I started to blame myself for not buying a zoom lens .....after seeing this: RAJAH BROOKE's BIRDWING!!!! (Trogonoptera brookiana) It is named after our white Rajah, James Brooke from England. (I cropped this photo in order to get the closer view)

I could feel my feets were shaking when I found this blue phasmid (stick insect) for the first time in my life!!!! Wowwww......so beautiful!

    And.....found a phasmid with 2 "horns" !!!

I believe there are more interesting insects living there. Also, I found a lot of beautiful birds up there. Will be back after getting a zoom lens.

The Lycopidiella nummularifolia reminds me of the 'Feng Shui' coin sword.

The insects i haven't seen any of those til now, the Trogonoptera brookiana looks like US Lockheed-Martin F-117 Nighthawk.

    Thanks for sharing!
