This is my DIY 2X 5ft with 2 X Osram T5 6500k 54W tube one each site with by using air con tranking. Lesser heat and my chiller kick in lesser and kick off faster.

    Light on

Image taken with T5 light on, result really amazing as the whole tank now look clear n bright, previous using PL tube and always have over exposure problem on top part when taking photo.

    WTS: 3ft T5 DIY light - 2 X 39W 6500k

Done this DIY yesterday, light one for testing and photo taken.

Actually material cost about $100++, not to mention few hrs time spending in sawing and drill hole and transportation to buy the air con tranking etc...

will be DIY another 2 X 3ft and 2 X 4ft with ocean free casing. Each support 2 T5 HO tube.

Steven: very good job on the DIY. Neat!

BTW - can you state the approximate length of the tubes and eBallast as shown in the pictures? So we can have a rough idea.

I noticed the tubes are "Reyclable". How do we go about sending it for recycling? Any idea?

Thks, will measure tonight and update this thread. The eballast I used is elbiru 2 X36-40w, same with those used for PL light. will update the measurement for osram slim eballast.

I have no idea the recycling thing, never ask the supplier too ..

hii, what is the wattage for the 3 feet T5, and how would the light intensity compared to a 30W FL?

I am currently using 4 x 30W FL, should i consider changing to your design using T5?

3ft T5 HO = 39W, LO = 24W i guess. 4 X 30w sound ok, if you change to T5 than eballast and tube and light holder all have to change.

I am currently using 4 x 40W eballast for my FL.
If i were to change my lighting setup to T5 or PL, do i need to change the corresponding eballast too? Can i reuse the existing 40W eballast?

When you use an aircon trunking as the casing, does the heating of the ballast cause any problems?

Also want to know how is the ballast secured onto the trunking? Any mountings (screw holes) on it to hold it onto the casing?

see the 2 silver thing on the casing...it is screw on it. Eballast doesn't generate so much heat till the tranking will melt ...

In fact the casing both end is not cover up so heat can gone out easily. I touched the casing b4 and it only feel a little bit warm only.

imagine a mini fan inside the casing on one end.and blow the air inside to ventilate out at the other end.
think the whole casing will be cool cool one.

but dont think it is necessary.
the heat of the eballast is not that much anyway.
