Hey all, does anyone know how to sex A. panchax? And what parameters are required for breeding? I'm gotten my hands on some juveniles that are about 2 - 4cm long at the moment. All 3 are silver, with a black trim over the dorsal fin and a yellow tinge on the anal fin.

    Photos to follow.

Not too sure, but if I recall correctly, the farms at Lim Chu Kang breeds them on a large scale. So it should not be that difficult.

    Cheers,

And here's the inevitable question from me:

Are the ones at lim chu kang native? Or are they from johor?

Regrettably, I don't think you will get any answers to this type of questions if you ask the farms.

However, using logic, it's quite unlikely they are native as it's practically illegal to net them. So.....if yours are not from Johor......I think it's best to leave it as that and not pursue along these lines any further. Even a fish knows when to keep it's mouth shut to stay out of trouble some of the times.

    Cheers,

Aplocheilus panchax are plant spawners. Make a spawning mop or just use hornwort or any floating plants, they will lay their eggs amongst the leaves, roots or the fibres on mop if it's used.

The males can be easily distinguished from the females. Males are more colourful, and should have a longer pair of pelvic fins that end in a sharp tip. Same with the male's dorsal fin, which should be pointed at the end. Males caught from streams in Singapore can be rather colourful, or just plain bluish in colour. Females on the other hand are usually drab in colour.

Storm, don't suppose you know what the parameters are? Killies.com seems to suggest they like hard alkaline water? That sort of strikes me a slightly ridiculous.

They're found in a variety of habitats, from freshwater streams to estuarine habitats. Depending on where they came from, they can handle a variety of water values. This is by far one of the toughest killifish species.

I've got a few of these fishes too. Here's a really lousy photo taken with my hp showing the colouration of the male. The male is the one right in front.
