seems to be there are some consistent black blotching on the red anal fin. compare my pix and see.

Actually Choy, after having this fish for a while i believe that the blotching is on both the anal and dorsal fin...you're talking about the little bleck specs no??
Also i see that your specimen has the top of the caudal fin nipped... do you also notice that this fish can get territorial and chase other fishes.. and in some cases nip fins?? i find this in my specimens, thats why got no SLR also die die shoot with my G6 first...then later see how...
I also notice that the Red in the body can spread not only in the fins but also into the portion of the body just in front of the dorsal fin, especially when they get territorial.
Did you take pics of the yellow variant?? i don't think they are different sex... perhaps just a colour variant... just like R.vaterifloris or S.axelrodi.... but thats just my personal speculation...

yes the black in anal fin is blotchy while the dorsal is "peppered". you see the other specimen in the background? that is the larger more beautiful one, can you see it has no more caudal fin

as in all characins, their colour can vary substantially depending on the incidence angle and intensity of light. as far as I recall, this fish has a redder version (more red in the caudal lobes) and the one like mine which has more yellowish on body and caudal lobe.

joydiv's colours are primarily due to flash being from the front I think.

Yup, flash from the front. Still a novice at fish photography. They move too fast!

Body colour is more silverish-yellow.. like choys..however if you look at the ones that display more red..they also display more yellow on the front of the head and sides (like mine).. when flashed from the front like joydiv's... it looks blue... in fact the blue tail accents on joydiv's fish is actually silverish-whitish when flashed top down.
