Hi All

Chance upon this talk when I am browse through the internet. Very useful for new hobbists who want to know more about water chemistry etc....

Cheers

Water Chemistry for Ornamental Fish Keeping

Date: 16 June 2007

Time: 10am – 12noon

Venue: Singapore Polytechnic, School of Chemical and Life Sciences, Reaction and Environmental Engineering Lab, W314

Audience: Upper Secondary Students

Fee: Free-of-charge

An aquarium is fragile ecosystem. As soon as fish, plant and food are introduced to a tank, the water starts to change in ways that are potentially hazardous to the fish. Artificial “interference” is hence required to maintain the environment as close to nature as possible. An example of this artificial interference is biological filtration.

Biological filtration is defined as the biological process by which ammonia is converted to nitrite and then finally to nitrate (nitrification). The harmful Ammonia is released in the water when food waste and dead plants are broken down by demineralising bacteria.

In this workshop, students will learn how to perform simple water quality check such as pH, turbidity, nitrate and nitrite level and dissolved oxygen level. Participants will also be introduced to various types of biological filtration system.
