I have had my planted tank for about 4mths already. The Saturday before (23th of June) I did a WC change of about 60%. That same evening, I noticed that my water has become cloudy. Thinking that I may have disturbed the substrate (ADA), I left it alone.

It didn't clear , therefore on the following Wed (27th, June) I did a 20% water change and cleaned the filter's sponge with treated water.

I have left alone till today but it still did not clear ..... any idea how to have clear water again?

    Thanks...

Cloudy water occurred when there are lot of particles (dirt) "cycling" in the H2O. There is a type of solution (I forgot the brand) which make those dirt "heavy" and sink to the bottom.

The WC may have disturbed and destroyed BB in your tank. Add BB(solution form) to your tank.

My fauna consist of mainly Tetras with a couple of Otos. Don't think they would disturb my substrate as they hadn't done so during the 4 months I shifted them from my old tank.

When I did WC, its possible that I 'killed' the BB.... think I should add processed active bacteria and leave the tank alone for it to cycle again.... really hope that its just BB. If its not, I really at a lost.

    Thanks guys.

Usually we only change 20% of water. Maybe it is due to $60 of water change that disturb the BB system. Just wait abit longer and hope the water clear.

I thought I read somewhere that EI method recommends to change 50% or more. Maybe I'm mistaken as I've read it quite sometime ago and its the 1st time I changed 60%.

Not too sure about EI method. What I usually do weekly around 20% change. So far tank is clear. Is your 4 month 60% change?

The tank is with me for the last 4 months. I do weekly wc, at the most fortnightly change if I'm overseas. Normally about 30% to 50%. Only that fateful day I was on the phone and left it draining on its own... and sucked out, reckon about 60%.

Your tank of 4 months should be quite establish already, you mentioned you cleaned the filter's sponge with treated water, is that tap water? You should clean it with the tank water to avoid killing off the BB, BTW how big is the tank, any possibilities the sponge filter can't handle the capacity?

I top up my water straight from the tap. Then add Seachem Prime into the tank. Past 4mths. there doesn't seem to have a problem...till that fateful day.

My filter's sponge was rinsed using water I shiponed from another tank. Should be treated and aged.

I've not added or changed water since the 27th of Jun whereby I changed 20%. Is it possible if I do a 20% WC this weekend?

Haiz....Its almost 2wks now... water still cloudy. This thread is becoming like a jounal...

What not try this, when you do the next WC, when you siphon off the water, instead of topping up all from the tap, add in the water from your establish tank from which the water is clear, do not add anything.

That might give a BB a head start to multiply before the next WC.

My other tank is only a 1ft cube. The water won't be enough to support my 422. I'm also unable to treat overnight water ... imagine how many pails I've to use. Therefore its straight from the tap for me. So headache. Checked this morning and water is still cloudy, but plants and fishes are doing fine.
