some put a heater into tank and let it control.
set temp, let's say 27 deg.
fan will not be able to cool tank to < 27deg as heater will kick in.

dino,
isn't ac fan noiser than dc fan?
thomas liew
Err.. don't know as I have not use a AC fan before.. but I find DC fan very noisy. I think maybe DC fans need more fan units (eg : 4 fans) inorder to achieve the cooling effect in which 1 'powerful' AC fan can make the same goal.[:]----------------

but i think AC is noiser.. but the noise isnt that noticable at least u have it running in your room in the middle of the nite, but once u get used to it, think yr aircon or fan makes more noise [] plus AC is plug and used, DC fan need to be DIY unless u get the ready made ones off the shelf which will cost a bomb
Hmm get those "brushless" type DC fan, those are more silent. Don't get those ball-bearing ones.

Wah now must also buy heater...[:0] How much is a heater and what is the recommended brands to get?----------------

not necessary, imo, temp wouldnt go too low.. 27-28 is a nice temp
I confirm that AC fans are more noisier than DC but AC fan are more powerful than DC. So you definately need more than 1 DC fan. How many fan depends on your tank ventilation. Due to my hood, the colling is very poor for my tank.
Usually each DC fan is rated at 0.12 amps. If you're using 3 fans your AC/DC convertor needs to be more than 400mA. See the sicker on the convertor for the rating.
I'm in a process of installing a set of 4 DC fan now but I really no chance to do it yet. But I can confirm it is definately more silent than the AC fan.
Liquidfx,
The brushless ones are the normal DC fan that we have. The bearings ones are better in terms of life-span and speeds. But both equally sound the same.
Ok... then what is the best place to place the fan to achieve the optimal effect? Put the fan/fans at one end of the tank and position it to blow from one end to another or let them face directly at the water surface and blow?----------------

Unless your room is air-con'ed most of the time, I do not believe you need a heater in Sg lah I think the fish and plants are getting more pampered than human being liao !
position yr fan between yr lights and the water surface, remember to blow thru the gap and not at the surface of the water.. u wanna get rid of the warm air trapped
peterkoh: have to disagree with u on the heater, some fishes like discus do require higher temp, and for a climate like ours, 365days tropical climate, but there are times, the temp goes 26-27 degree and thats when the heater comes into play
How about positioning the fan/fans such that they suck the air out instead of blowing the air in? like the exhaust fan of the PC?----------------

Anyone tried before?
gchoo,
i think for closed aquarium, the fans can be used to extract warm air from top of hood.
if your aquarium is an open one, don't think the sucking air will be effective.
but no harm trying as you can always remount the fans.
