Anyone encounter female that are not yellowish when they are in breeding mood? I have a pair of caca orange flash, but the female was in reddish when she lay her eggs.

Eh, yellow for me. Just that not the whole body. The red is probably from the genes of a caca triple red.

Bro Genes, It looks yellow to you? I think it's the lighting, it's looking like a red colored fish back in my tank. The picture is not of good quality I would say, but I do accept your saying of the fellow could have being a hybrid.

    Re: Sexing Apistogramma cacatuoides

The picture you posted tells me it's not in breeding mood. A female in breeding dress should be more yellow then this picture. But you seemed to be indicating in your post that the female bred as what is shown in your picture. So if the picture truely describes what you observed, then there is some slight tinge of yellow in it.

Also, caca orange flash are hybrids created from caca red through selective breeding. It's actually not difficult. Put a male triple red together with an orange flash female, you will get lots of orange flash babies. The intensity of the orange depends on selective breeding within the orange variant. Another way of getting orange flash is to inbreed your triple red.

Let me share my Caca Orange Flash in breeding mood.... I will share the male first... notice something interesting...

When I first got him... Female in the background.

Breeding mood... notice the black stripe almost disappeared!

Female in breeding dress. Very yellow... maybe because I am using pink light.

Compare the yellow female and the male.

Hi Genes, I don't think Orange flash is a hybrid. Its just an aquarium strain... Just like triple red and double red.

A hybrid is a cross between 2 species, but for orange flash, its still Ap. Cacatuoides.
