    just
    leave
    it
    alone []
there are two types of this plant, one of which u mentioned
the other is thalictroides siliquosa (some naming issue i don't recall) and it looks exactly the same except the leaves are finer and look a hell lot more aesthetic
when i had mine, i just left it and it'll eventually form a good bushy stand

Hi ceratopteris is a rosette plant,so its fronds (its a fern, really)all come up from the base of the plant. Dont think you can trim it like stem plants for teh bush effect.
Unless u wound the leaf tips, which, under certain conditions would cause small plantlets to grow from those wounds, but then roots will dangle from them also. It happens to mine so its rather like a small bush but a rather strange one.

think you're confusing it with java fern?
cos both of those are actually grown as floating plants

Also known as Sumatra Fern (from Dennerle's site) and Oriental Water Fern (from Scheurmann's book).

One thing I don't like about the plant is that after developing roots at one of the nodes, the plantlet will break off and float away. This way, it is hard to get a bushy effect. It grows too fast.

Why not try the similar looking Hygrophila difformis?

    Yep its water sprite,
and it can be grown floating, where it will produce flat fronds that line the water surface.
but once u anchor it, it will start putting up sturdier fronds with thicker stalks.
Once its established, and its fronds break the surface, itll start putting out emersed fronds that are needle-like.Not pretty at all

wish I had digicam can take my ceratopteris infestation at its different stages
