Saw this phrase in another forum "Pearling happens when oxygen is saturated but doesn't necessarily mean plants are healthy" Is this correct?

    Thanks.

Pealing can be cause by algae

Pearling is by product of photosynthesis, at least it will tell you that the plant is growing. I'm not sure about healthy or not healthy. Does the forum mention what is the reason behind the phrase?

Plants are healthy when they look healthy and grow robustly. Pearling isn't the right guide for health IMO. It just means plants are photosynthesizing like what shadow says.

Plant pearling is the best where oxygen is released into the water, great for fishes.

but isn't plants that are photosynthesizing well means that they are healthy??

not necessarily so. photosynthesizing just means that they're alive and continuing to stay alive, it doesn't reflect their health. it's like saying just because a person is breathing he's healthy

But plants breathe as well. Photosynthesizing on the other hand is how plants get carbon for growth. Doesn't that mean the more pearling, the faster they're growing?

maybe i should have paid more attention during biology class?

my understanding is that photosynthesizing is a function necessary for the plant's survival. plants breath (respire) as well, but only when the conditions are not met for photosynthesis (ie no light).

to draw another analogy then: since photosynthesis is how plants get carbon for growth, shall we say that the human equivalent can be digestion? when we eat more food, we end up digesting more and producing more nutrients for our growth...however that doesn't mean that we're healthy are we, especially when we overeat.

Plants that are 90% dead can also pearl when conditions improve. They can also be covered head to toe in unremovable algae and still pearl.

I think you are confused with something else, respiration in plants do occur during day and night, with or without light.

haha like i said, maybe i should have paid more attention in biology class

since photosynthesis is carbon producing for growth, i'll just stick to the "digestion" analogy instead then, though i think the same can be said for any function the body does to remain alive - just because it's happening doesn't mean the body's healthy, just that it's alive.

Pearling happens when rate of oxygen production by plants > rate of oxygen dissolved in water.
