Suggestions for compact cameras

My wife is bugging me to buy her one of those slim compacts cameras.

Any suggestions ?

i always like fuji compact camera, they have high ISO, good to take tank photo without flash . However other brand also start to have high ISO

The Sony ones are quite slim, as are the Casio ones. The Canon IXUS 70 is small and compact too! There's a recently launched Panasonic that claims to be world slimmest, but I can't remember in which category.

a friend once shared a piece of advice: when buying a compact, buy a brand that doesn't produce dSLRs as well... those that do have an incentive to make slightly worse compacts to lure you into the world of dSLRs, while those that don't focus on making their compacts the best that they can.

don't know how true that is, but i found it interesting

The opposite is also true.
The technology of used in a SLR can be sent downstream to the compacts after a number of years. R&D cost is reduced, indirectly bringing the price down of products.

Buy her Sony T-200 cybershot, 3.5'' LCD, 8.0 mega pixels, 5x optical zoom. Expensive but come with 2GB memory stick +strap +case.

i also thinking of getting a compact digicam (old canon G3 dieded). but something slimmer than the G series... good for urban/landscape/chiobu shots and with full manual exposure options.... AND below $500... got such cam or not?

Perhaps a used Canon Powershot G6 or G7? Or the Panasonic Lumix LX1?

me getting the Fuji F50fd, but having problem getting the underwater housing.

F50fd is less than SGD 390 here (shui huo of course), but the housing(don't have shui huo) cost more than the camera! sighhh.

anyone knows the price in SG?

oh... don't get casio... most of the screens are crack magnets!!.. i say this because 2 of my friends.. both of which bought a casio...both of which also dropped the camera once, not from a very high place..and both of which... the view screen cracked right across from one end to the other from the slighest of knocks... coincidence??? i personally dont think so.

Manufacturer's (not necessary made by them) UW housing (normally up to 30-40 meter depth) normally cost between $250-400.
In the case if the manufacturer have no such intention of supplying UW housing, you could normally get 3rd party housing. Ikelite is a good brand and cost between $500 - $1000 for prosumer camera.10bar do housing customisation which would cost up to $1000+...

Third party housing are normally of better quality and can take more abusing.

how about those water proof zip-lock plastic that sell in home-fix or DIY shop. I saw on their advertisement display, they put digital camera inside and put it inside fish tank. I do not remember how many meter it can go under water though.

and its not like you are going to be able to tell the difference between 7.1 and 12 also la... unless you want to print picture SOOOOO big... you printing?? if so then i understand...if not, you dont need to buy housing for 790 mah..

somemore with out the houseing..that makes it small and easy to store and no fumbling around....just shove in water and take picture...then towel dry.. keep... end of story.. i think its a great outdoor portable underwater picture taker. Need to think of functionality and additional cost also mah... not just which one cheaper or got more megapixel..

Talking about shock proof. My girlfriend dropped her lumix from waist height onto rocky ground last week. Only a small scratch at the side and still working fine.
