Thanks for the link. I'm think what kind of material is the cupboard, why doesn't it collapse and its able to substain the weight of the gravel pushing it at the back. The front is only sand and it takes time before it compress...

Edwin, full ADA substrate is cheaper than you think.
You don't need the full ADA route. But the substrate route will be extremely useful when you want to keep the tank long term.

Full ADA route = hardware(tank, lights, co2, filter) all ADA

Substrate wise, I think I will go with ADA of course....but wonder do I need to beef up the substrate with power sand, etc. .....

    Edwin,

You definitely need those. ADA soil and Power sand alone is not enough.

I learned the hard way. Now tank got problem.

I believe Valice or Roland will be the best person to advice you man.

how about this ferka + ada soil layer? recipe for disaster?

anyhow, I am in a very early stage(kiasu) of incorporating a planted tank (4x2x2) for my new home...sometime in march 08.

Should be doing a similar cabinet tank like Roland's GC HQ...the tank by the wall leading into the office...

Now, design cabinet compartment, lighting choice, air flow consideration...

Guess what I told my wifey, no tank..no reno...so she gave up...

That a good one. Preferably to use all ADA as you are not sure of the compositoin of other fertilizers.

You can pop down to Biotope. Thio has setup up a full ADA substrate tank. Think he is using the ADA Amanzonia II.

Even if you don't go full ADA substrate, but the theory behind the substrate system is worth emulating.

If you look at Wayne's journal on his Magic Stage, he did not use the Powersand. Instead, he uses peat + volcanic rocks, which is similar to that of ADA's powersand, and also what Tom Barr was advocating as well. What's important is also the substrate bacteria either in the form of mulm from old tanks or Bacter 100 which ADA has. These substrate bacteria helps preventing the substrate from becoming anerobic or hardening.

As for the use of Penac, well, this is a debatable point, which I don't which to go in. Anyway, the content of Penac A and W is similar to that of Seachem's equilibrium, which is very much the secondary macro nutrients. From all of ADA's tank, we see very little usage of NO3 or PO4, yet plants grow tremendously. It is because of the very fertile substrate.

There is a saying by experienced ADA users: "ADA system allows you to grow any plant. So you just need to concentrate on aquascaping."

Now, many of us are just planters, not scapers yet. ADA takes the planting and growing out of the picture and let us concentrate on scaping.

I think Vincent meant Penac P (for plants) and Penac W (for water). We normally apply at base along with the other 3 powders, tourmaline BC, bacter 100 and clear super.

    regards
