If my small tank has no surface schemer, after a day of water change, a layer of oil will surface. I heard its ok to leave it alone, but look like polluted water la.

Any brilliant ideas on how to remove it.

The actually more of a protein film.... normally skimmer is your best option but due to constraints like your tank size and your filter, it's not so good.

    1. You can actually use paper to remove it. Just lay the paper on the surface and soak up the layer.

    2. Manually skim the water surface.

    3. Use surface dwelling fishes like guppies, platties or mollies. The will eat/remove the protein film.

    my 2 cents worth
    Cheers!!

i have the same problem with my small tank as well.
of the 3 types of fishes mentioned... which would be the best options?

heard the black mollies are prone to certain types of dieases...

just get a pair of those little red platies sold in most shops... or a pair of female guppies (the males are less hardy). And remember not to overfeed, or they won't bother with the film. Feeding once in two days is more than enuff.

The fishes I mentioned prefer neutral to slightly hard water conditions. Slightly acidic would be ok. So please beware ok

i have a thought to overcome this problem... and would like the forum's comments and suggestions...

my tank is 1.25 feet only and i use an eheim liberty 100 (one of those hanging external filters)...

I am wondering if I can connect a U shape tube to the inlet and let it end at the water surface level... to make some sort of simple overflow system...

the end of the tube can be covered with a mesh to prevent small fishes from being sucked in...

    any comments/criticisms would be appreciated...

    Hey Joe
Sounds like a nice idea. Problem is you have to adjust the intake to a point where it will serve as a skimmer. Too high and there will be no water intake and the filter may spoil? Too low and there's no surface suction. I once tried using a powerhead to do this surface skimming. It works but I took it out the next morning because if the water level drops, the powerhead will be sucking air only.

    Thanks for the advice KF...

i'm looking around for a black U connector for my filter but most LFS only carry the green accessories for eheim... not very nice...

another problem for me is with the DIY CO2... i'm currently passing my CO2 output into my filter inlet... if i am successful with my skimmer then i might hafta pass my CO2 tube directly into the U connector... and i can't see the bubbles from there... not a foolproof idea...
