I saw this brand of substrate "Dennerle" (or something similar) some quartz gravel - is anyone using it? 10 kg going for $38. the grains look small - is it suitable if I use it solely (apart from fert)for plants?

How about others? want to ask for more opinion before buying...thanks.

dennerle is inert, so its not ideal.

its seachem flourite or ada powersand.

I'm using flourite for my 2ft, no base fert is needed. I've heard the same thing about ada powersand.

loupgarou, where do you get both these substrate - haven't seen ADA powersand before - do they have fert included oredy?

Oh BTW, too happy to keep it to myself - went down to Halus today, and bought a big piece of driftwood from Iwarna Aquarium. simple 'V' shaped, will proped it in a 'L' in my November-then-set-up tank. think about 7kg. Scrubbed it clean and immersing it water. *sigh* another item done for the tank. Makes your day, no matter what sh*t you faced, doesn't it?

Any more things I should do to the wood? cannot boil it lah - no pot big enug - about 60cm high and 40cm wide. Not to mention sure kana scolding for making wood brew []

This has been one of my happiest day this month. Been looking for it for 3 weeks oredy...

anakin, I heard Teo selling driftwood with pregrown moss and stuff, could save alot of work. If you're going next week can check it out.

seachem fluorite you can get from aquamart. its 48 per 7kg. you need 6 bags for 4ft tank I thnk. you can mix up to 50% gravel for it to be still effective. it takes along time to clean and lots of water. your first rinse will be like INK.

Remember if you use stuff like ADA powersand which contain stuff like peat mix into it, you will not be able to measure CO2 level using the pH/KH/CO2 table liao. Even the CO2 test kit will not be reliable with peat in the water as well..last resort is aggaration liao..like what some of us doing at the moment []

Yep hwchoy, I'm going down next week but waiting for transport arrangement, coz dunno where Teo farm is.

Wah, Seachem sounds tough to clean ... do you add any additional fert like root monster, etc.? are all base fert so difficult?

Peter, read your thread on peat - tough time measuring CO2. dun think I'll be going for Powersand liao.

fluorite isn't that difficult, just waste a lot of water to clean it. heh.
but i like it since its NOT base fert, you can just uproot plant and plant it elsewhere, you don't need basefert when you use this.
