Now, to answer your queries, filtration is to clean the water of waste particles and to assist in the biological fliltration whereby the bacteria converts the harmful ammonia produced as waste from the fauna and the rotting food to the less harmful nitrites and nitrates. But in a vivarium, it might not be necessary due to the amount of water available...
What plants do you intend to use? There are LOTS of plants you can use in a vivarium setup. Will you be using terrestrial plants or emersed aquatic plants? Do you like stemmed plants? Also, the height and size of plant leaves depend on the lighting conditions, fertility of the soil and to a lesser degree, the temperature of the vivarium...
Show us the pictures of the plants you intend to use and the setup that you came up with... It is much easier to help that way then to expect members to post pictures for you...
