I believe that is the concept behind PenacP + PenacW + Tourmaline BC.
Does any one added bamboo charcoal mix with base fert?
I found this in wikipedia:
(3) Mineralization
Trees and shrubs grew by sucking up necessary nutrition such as minerals from the ground. Because of that, when trees and shrubs are made into charcoal, these carbonated and oxidized minerals can be easily dissolved in water. Therefore, if the charcoal is submerged in water, the minerals which are trapped in the charcoal will start dissolving. This will change the water to mineral water.
Another source said:
When added to flowering plants, fine particles of bamboo charcoal can improve the soil. Balances acidity/alkalinity levels
Will it have the same effect for underwater plant. Will the carcoal become atlernative source of carbon? If I soak bamboo charcoal with concentrated KNO3, KH2PO4, iron and trace mineral, would it become a fert reservoir.

I'm back!
Not exactly.
But more of Tourmaline + Bacter 100, where Tormlaline acts as food for the bacteria in Bacter 100, thereby very quickly kickstart the bacteria factory in the substrate.
Penac P and W is more to provide other secondary macro nutrients in the substrate.
But Robert, do give the Bamboo Charcoal under the substrate a try. It might be indeed beneficial.
I just read "the style of ADA 2006" on power sand special, it is also contain charcoal powder to bacteria as a food and create living substrate.
Adding Bamboo Charcoal might indeed work, though I have no way to compare between with and without charcoal and conclude if it is does improve the plant growth.
I think not just Tourmaline BC + Bacter 100. TBC is added as 3rd layer, over the 2 Penacs which are ferts, probably slow release forms. So it's really more like the 5 powders than 2 + 3.
By the way i added Daiso bamboo charcoal, $4 worth, crushed with a hammer. The water looks clearer!
I'm back!
The idea a bit different here. I want to add because of the idea that bamboo charcoal act as a nutrient reservoir. Use it as a base fertilizer and hopping it will also promote root grows.
