for my 422, i put in 1 red betta, 20 neon, 30 golden pencil and 12 pgymy cory. all doing well till today. Loss some pgymy though but not due to water condition. They were suck into the sump and end up dried on the bio mat.

Get 1 packet of feeder fish to do the job, but after that you got to decide what to do with them.

I'd suggest to get a pack of feeder fish as well, I used a pack of ghost shrimps to cycle my tank. Worked well enough.

Forgotten to mention, when I used the pack of feeder fish/shrimps to cycle the tank, what I did was to dump them into a pail, and dose methylene blue, leave them for about 24 hours before using them as my tank-cycling stock.

    Hi,

I suggest feeder fish because they are inexpensive to dispose of later on, and if they are sacrificed during the cycling process, it won't cost too much heartache. Dipping them in methylene blue before adding them to the tank is a good idea.

However, personally, I prefer to go the fishless way, it may take a longer time, but I find it more humane.

I always place my trust on my cherry barbs (puntius titteya) to do the job of cycling new tanks. The males display deep cherry red, and the females very plumb. They are less prone to contracting diseases, good tankmates, naturally active and playful, and even multiply for me!

in my case, i always use my existing fishes. When i am working on my 3 feet tank, my fishes will be in a styrofoam box with air hose connected. When i am done working in a few hours, i will let the pump run for another hour or so, before returning the fishes to the tank. And they will help me cycle the tank. Yet to have any casualties though! been doing this always (i know it's a bad habit ).

Same here. Or, if available, I use a pail or two of water from another tank.

Ammonia from urine can be used too. That is if you can get over the stigma/taboo. Not that far from fish waste.

Won't feel too nice if i put my hands in the tank with my own bodily watse haha. For me, i use 1 market prawn. It provides enough ammonia to feed the BBs and speeds up the cycling process

Thanks Quixotic for the link, a good read. May I add that you may also use bottled BB to speed up the process.
