    Hi Mod

Somehow my post count does not increase though I have had more than 10 post. I am still unable to start new threads in marketplace. Also, previously, I could PM people, but am unable to once again. Appreciate it if someone could help take a look at my account. Thanks!!

    Hi,
not all posts in all sections contribute to the post count. For example, your posts in Aquatalk and Marketplace doesn't.

A few welcome notes in the member's introduction sub forum will do the trick.

By the way, if you have words like u, ur, tml, wat, den, dun, or thx, you will find your post disappear very quick and this will affect your post count. Do take note.

Your PM function will be activated when there is enough post count. This is a function reserved for our active members.

    Cheers,

Hi Mike, perhaps you can refer to this thread:
    http://www.aquaticquotient.com/forum...ad.php?t=19268

Please suggest other commonly used and recognised abbreviations to add to the list by following the link provided there. Thank you.
    Read me! http://justikanz.blogspot.com/

Starting cheap, now have Cryptocoryne beckettii, C.beckettii var petchii, C.crispatula var.balansae, C.griffithii(Melted! ), C.nurii, C.parva, C.pygmaea(Melted! ), C.tonkinensis(Melted! ), C.walkeri, C.wendtii 'Brown', C.wendtii 'Green', C.wendtii 'Green Gecko', C.wendtii 'Tropica' and Cryptocoryne x willisii

"pls" edited from my post. I actually thought is acceptable since it is quite commonly used in official memos/ correspondence.
The problem I see with some of these shortforms are that yr could be your, year or yeah right, temp can be temperature, temporary, template or tempore (Latin: in the time of) and so on.

So rather than open them up to interpretations and ambiguity, I would tend to remove them by spelling in full (except for some really obvious ones, like e.g., etc).

Just 2 cents of my thoughts.

Sure, I do agree, you can make it out from the context but only to some extent, not all the words, all the time.

How about those whose first language isn't English? Again, this has been mentioned before, they do not translate well in translators.

But then I suppose nothing is perfect.

Mike... i agree with you.. i mean sometimes shortforms are just handy and when taken into context, it really is quite hard to misunderstand anything. They are quite clear... to english speakers. This is where i also agree with Quixotic.. it isn't that AQ wants to be so anal about shortforms..but then, sometimes we have to consider non-english speakers as well...
As they learn proper english in class, it is quite hard for them to try to understand abbreviations that seem so easily understood by english speakers, but is not really obvious to them in their view. So it is just trying to make it a little easier for them.
