Most of the public aquariums in my country are mostly displaying non native fishes except the aquarium in Zoo Negara. 95% of the fishes on display are native fish. Besides, you even can see the famous & exotic native aquatic plant, Cryptocoryne in this aquarium !!!

Many thanks to Herman for inviting me to visit the aquarium set up by him.

    The building:

    The entrance:

    Inside the building:

    One of the display tanks:

Got the posters & banners on every corners to explain to visitor about our river system, what species of fish & aquatic plants can be found in that habitat in Malaysia (note: some pictures on the posters are contributed by me):

I really like this public aquarium because that place is really clean & I was really surprised that they have very huge collection of local fish!!! A lot of fishes there are never seen / caught by me before!

Herman is looking at his fish:

The famous ornamental fish, Asian arowana is actually from the big rivers of South East Asia, including the rivers from our country:

A big & bizzare looking catfish, Bagarius sp. This big fellow was caught by a fisherman in a river in Perak.

    Close-up of the catfish:

hmm. i think the 1st catfish is the same as one that i read about in a fishing magazine. it was said that it lives in a boulder strewn river in Perak too and was only found in that particular river. and they said that it is very nice tasting and its red meat! the magazine termed it as "freshwater shark".

nice aquarium though. very 'professional looking'!?

I think Herman did a good job in up keeping the aquarium. Many fishes and plants are collected by himself using his free time, sacrificing his own weekend. The crypts that was shown is crypt affinis if I am am right as i went to the collecting trip with him. It was an enjoyable trip as we caught quite a few species of fishes for the aquarium. Learned a few new thing from him.

Too bad, anything that don't make money, surely be teared down soon. If there were funds to support the aquarium, maybe we get more inspirations from it.
