Embarking on my new 4x2x2 tank soon..I will be using ferka base fert...I wonder whether that will work with ADA Aquasoil or not...

What would be a good combo for a potent fertile base? Anyone please suggest..

    Hi Wynx,

I would strongly recommend you Wonder-Gro Root+. Some forumers here have tried it & reported excellent result. The best part is it is very affordable. Details of the product can be found here:

i will be going jbj base + ada soil in dec.
my current lapis + jbj cant grow some plants.

i presume that a clay-based substrate will do a better job.
i used aquaclay last time (similar to ada) and i can grow ANYTHING! but not with lapis..
so i kinda think that the basefert is not so crucial but more to the substrate used.

    just my opinion.
    hope it helps though

Edwin, FERKA works fine with ADA soil. You may consider a 6L M size ADA Power Sand Special + penac P together with Aquabase for a more power-up substrate.

Or you can just get some bamboo charcoal and add to the base, or as a filter media.

I am one of the user of Wonder-Gro Root+, quite satisfied with the results I am seeing. Haven't tried Ferka nor ADA so can't give an comparison. But my crypts did not not experience any melting after I administered the tabs.

If you're looking for root inserts, i too recommend Wondergro Root+, results can be seen in a matter of days. I had some wilting swords in my low-tech tank due to poor nutrients in substrate and no water column dosing at all...2 days after i put the tabs in, i see new leaves growing out.

if you're looking for base fert and are already using a fertile substrate like GEX or ADA, i recommend bamboo charcoal as heeroyu 16 mentioned. You can get bamboo charcoal chips sold in Daiso (much bigger quantity than the bamboo charcoal tubes which you have to crush yourself) to place under the substrate. It should work similarly to ADA's powersand and tourmaline BC combined. Then put in some mulm from an established tank or liberally sprinkle fish food in (for bacteria food) and pour some liquid beneficial bacteria in and then put your soil on top. DIY ADA base system minus the penacs

Another day's gone..the cloudiness persisted....I really wonder why...did another 80% water change...tank's clearing up...might have to adopt more water change again...sighz...

I have never seen such cloudiness/murkiness all my days of doing a planted tank.

Did you stirred up the substrate when filling it up with water ?
