Hi
Would you please explain why baking soda is necessary? Thanks
Acting as a catalyst...? It is said to prolong the production of CO2.----------------

i heard it act as catalyst...
DIY is cheap and equally good as the C02 system..but just make sure the DIY bottle is seal complety..else ants will come and visit your fish tank when the sugar get out..
don't think baking soda acts as a catalyst as it does not cause or accelerate the chemical process.
it is said to be a buffer to reduce the acidity of the sugar & yeast solution and allow longer co2 production.
without baking soda, it usually last about 2 weeks.
with baking soda, it will last about 4 weeks.

is baking soda = bicarbonate of soda ? heard it over at FAQ section that they are not similar. any side effect ?
Thanks. Will try it soon. I have been using DIY CO2 without baking soda. Normally lasted only 1 week. Will report any improvement.
Baking soda = Bicarbonate of soda = sodium bicarbonate
Do not confuse baking soda with baking powder.
Vincent - AQ is for everyone, but not for 'u' and 'mi'.
Why use punctuation? See what a difference it makes:A woman, without her man, is nothing.
A woman: without her, man is nothing.
Correct. From the ingredients on the bottle, Baking Powder has other compounds like Starch, Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate in addition to Sodium Bicarbonate.----------------

If you intend to use in DIY CO2, Baking Powder or Baking Soda works as well.
However if you intend to raise the kH in your tank, please avoid Baking Powder. It will turn your water cloudy. You won't want starch in your tank, right?

If not wrong, yeast require a slight alkaline to survive, thus the baking soda is to increase the water alkalinity.----------------
