Before 2007 is over, I wanted to explore the southern part of Peninsular Malaysia (Johor state of Malaysia) again. This time I went there with Herman & Lim. Three of us spent our first 2 days in the west coast & then on the 3rd day, we explored some new areas & revisiting some old places in the east coast of Johor.

Many thanks to Herman & Lim for this unforgettable trip in 2007!!!

Before going to Johor, I spent 2 days in the concrete jungle of Malaysia : Kuala Lumpur city. Nothing to explore, except buying books & I window shopping.

I need to take some times to process my images from RAW file into JPEG file, so I only can show some pictures which I took in Johor at the moment.

A river in southern Peninsular Malaysia:

First time in my life for seeing such a big population of Cryptocoryne nurii (aquatic aroid; foreground) in Peninsular Malaysia !!!

3 of us were jumping up & down like small kids when we found the most rare species of natural cross hybrid of pitcher plant: Nepenthes gracilis x Nepenthes rafflesiana !!!! Hoooooray!!!!!

This beautiful loach from blackwater swamp....Kottelatlimia sp. (at first I thought it was Kottelatlimia katik)

    "BE RIGHT BACK!!!"

This is a fishing trip, so most of the pictures here are aquatic flora & fauna. For picture of pitcher plants & others, I'll post in other thread.

DAY 1 - According to the info from a hobbyist, 2 beautiful species of wild fighting fish can be found in a secret location in the west coast of Johor. It took us quite some times to find the exact location as we're kinda lost our way in the muddy road.

An eel (Monopterus albus) trying to cross the road to a drain in opposite side:

After spending half an hour searching for the location, we finally found the remaining peat swamp forest in the west coast. Most of the forest there already "replaced" by oil palm plantation.

Collecting fish in the blackwater swamp (Water PH is around 5.

Dwarf fighting fish, Betta persephone (only 4cm long! The color is not showing up as it is under the stress)

Unidentified species of plant growing in the swamp:

Yup, if it raining on that day, then we couldn't drive on that road anymore. Very lucky indeed! It rained in the evening on day 1.

After taking our lunch in a Chinese cafe, we headed north to search for a mysterious aquatic aroid :- Cryptocoryne decus silvae. Until now, nobody knows where is the plant grows cos the person who found it in 1971 didn't record down the name of locality when he found this species. Now most of the natural habitats already gone & replaced by oil palm plantation.....so it's not easy to find it, but we decided to go to a place in northern Johor to find it.

We didn't find it when the darkness fell. However, we found 2 interesting species.

The freshwater swamp in northern Johor:

We found a HUGE population of very very rare species of semi-aquatic plant, Barclaya rotundifolia !!!! HOOOOORAY!!!!

Then, Lim went to check out a stream & then he came back to tell us that he found Amazon sword plant! We thought he was joking with us because Amazon sword plant is from Amazon, not in Southeast Asia. So, I went to check it out & shocked to see a small clump of Amazon sword plant growing near the stream!!!

Amazon sword plant, Echinodorus sp. (This one MUST BE introduced by somebody into this stream)

Found Limnophila sp. (native water plant) in the same stream.

A sandy river in an abandoned logging site. This is the last place where we explored on day 1.

Day 2: It was a bad day for fishing cos it rained for whole morning!!! Rather than doing nothing in the hotel, we headed south to an oil palm estate to fish for Betta pulchra. Betta pulchra is a pugnax group of wild fighting fish which looks very similar to Betta pugnax.

The oil palm estate: (that site used to be a peat swamp, long time ago)

    Betta pulchra was caught using hook & line method;

A mouth brooding chocolate gourami (Sphaerichthys osphromenoides):

The cute little licorice gourami, Parosphromenus tweediei (adult; 4cm long only)

We spent almost the whole morning in the oil palm estate. Around 12.30pm, we went to a Chinese restaurant in a small town to eat chicken rice. Then, we headed west to search for a rare species of aquatic aroid, Cryptocoryne longicauda. This species is very common in Borneo, but yet, it is a rare species in southern Peninsular Malaysia. We searched for few hours in some places (which I can not disclose here) but failed to find it. Later we found out we took the wrong turn at a junction & ended up in somewhere near Johor Bahru. Then, we decided to go to the east coast to find another rare species of licorice gourami, Parosphromenus alfredi .

Due to the heavy rainfall (rainy season was just started), water level of all the rivers in east coast was very high & we couldn't find a good spot to look for licorice gourami.

However, we found a freshwater swamp very close to a beach. We didn't find the licorice gourami except some common blackwater fish.

    The swamp:

    Rasbora einthovenii:

    Rasbora pauciperforata:

    Aplocheilus panchax:

That evening, we stayed in a hotel at Kota Tinggi.

Day 3. Welcome to the rainy season. It rained for the whole morning again. It was another bad day again to explore in the swampy forest in the east coast as all the leeches were coming out to hunt for blood!!!

Before leaving Kota Tinggi, we had a breakfast in the Chinese stalls:

First location: Revisiting the site of Crypt. schulzei. As Lim never seen the flower of this species before, we came back there & found some beautiful flowers.

    Crypt. schulzei (in the stream).

Then, We went to visit the site of natural cross hybrid of Crypt. purpurea:

The flower of natural cross hybrid of Crypt. purpurea:

After that, we went to an old logging site to explore. There are a lot of jungle streams & swamps in that area. We found a beautiful swamp where an unidentified species of Crypt found growing there. We think it's Crypt. cordata.

    Crypt. cordata ? (submerged condition)

Then we found even more unidentified species of Crypt. in different spots. One of the jungle streams:

No idea what species of Crypt. is this ?

After taking our lunch in a Malay stall near the road, we headed east to Kahang. The road is cutting through a lowland forest. A year ago when I was travelling along this road, I could see the dense forest on the both side of that country road....but now......:

Luckily, they didn't chop down all the trees in that area. We managed to find an undisturbed jungle not far away (but for how long?).....

Crypt nurii (on the river bed):

Crypt nurii is growing abundantly in this river.

    Crypt nurii:

Then, we went to another spot & found this unidentified species looks like Crypt. schulzei:

Betta pugnax in its natural habitat:
