in some systems the limiting nutrient is Carbon
in others it might be phosphate, nitrate, iron, potassium etc etc
in the first case, adding carbon will let the plants grow, using up the excess nutrients in the water
when plants grow well, algae doesn't (rule of thumb)
    that's how

    as for the second
that's why there is no universal add this, remove add surefire formula way to rid algae
    trial and error *shrug*

Guys, I just want to share my experience about BBA. I noticed the outbreak always certainly occur when I change my tank setup or alter my maintenance schedule.
First, I increased my wattage from 72 to 144 for my 3 ft tank. BBA appeared.
Then I changed my CO2 diffuser to reactor. BBA spreaded faster to more areas.
Finally, I did not changed water for 2 weeks. BBA is gaining a stronghold in my tank.
Now, I just changed water, added some hornwort and duckweed. Hope to see some improvements in a few months time. I still fertilize the tank. So trying to experiment whether BBA will overrun my tank.[]

Ok, seems stupid and impossible but i try this on my background styrofoam, i drain the water, to about half or with only 1/3 of the tank's hight, i kill the BBA thts on the back wif fire..JUst run thru wif a lighter and like brushing the fire onto the BBA.

After which i filled the tank back wif new water, i saw the BBA redish which mean-Dead- 1week time, yamato easily cleared them and with the helping hands of 250 malayan shrimps. =)
    Cheers!

DEA, does it make a difference? To me brush or beard are all red algae.
Anyway, found an interesting idea for those who might want to try it out. I found one small driftwood totally covered by BBA. I took it out and dry it at my window for a few days. After that all BBA was dead, but they give a very nice red coloration to my wood. I find it looks good in my tank now. Anyone care to try it out?

    got big big difference
brush algae is the one that looks like, well, bristles
beard algae reminds one of hair from the nether regions (don't laugh ^ ^)
beard algae doesn't go away when it dies
it leaves behind the curly hair like portion which nothing eats and even h202 takes 3 wks to dissolve
that's the one which i hate the most

So Yimin, Black brush algae and black beard algae are different? Black brush is the small tuft of hair? and the black beard is the curly ones? Do correct me...
    Cheers!

no idea where to find specific literature
you might want to look at thekrib.com, they might have it archived
or even better, the APD archives

    scientific names? i really don't think so ^ ^
life's too short to be IDing algae in latin

    the two types are ime
you can go look around, it's easy to differentiate
brush algae is grayish, sometimes even translucent
beard algae is an opaque black

i thought beard and brush algae are common names given to describe the algae? Aren't they the same thing?
DEA, the brush algae sounds like staghorn algae to me.
