So running a 1hp chiller continuously for 24hrs a day, monthly bill comes to [:0] $85.

As I understand it, the chiller does not run at full power all the time, but only when the water temp rises above the upper limit? Does this affect the total power usage?

chillers should be using simple on/off control.
switch on when temperature rises above an upper limit and switches off when temperature drops below a lower limit.
so chillers will consume full power only during the on cycle. how frequent it switches on depends on the cooling needed.
however, the cooling fan should be running at all time but this consumes minimal power.

Mok & Juggler, You're always welcome to drop by.

Ng, Bought the cocopeat from Ikea. Not ex at all.

Bigjohnstud, nice of you to notice. Yup, fixed 2X10W with leftover electronic ballast.

Lip, the chiller is rated 0.25 HP. So you do the math. The cooling power is ok. Now set at 27 deg. The chiller comes in and out according to the temp setting.

Tawauboy, Great Idea! Will be doing that..... no need drilling liao.
    Cheers!!

Thx sherwin for the reply. I guess that works out to about S$21.50 per month, not too bad i guess.

Just wondering whether the model you have emit a lot of heat?

    Lip,
Your calculation is wrong as the chiller do not run 24/7. It will start only when the temp reaches 28deg and stops when it reaches 27deg. So the working process is not constant. It should be less than what you mentioned. Maybe if I get the chance I'll time how long the chiller runs each time.
    Cheers!!

Thx, Sherwin, but don't worry about it. I get what you mean. As long as the extra electricity bill I have to pay is not likely to exceed the $21 pm, I can live with it.

of course rates may go up....[]

ok. one hour saved would save me about $0.80 a month....hahahah

btw, i really would like to know if your chiller emits lots of heat, like the fridge. Need lots of ventilation?
