    Hi, can anyone please help me on the estimation on
    the wattage require in a 3ft(L) X 3ft(W) X 3ft(H)
    tank, and what is the common practice on the height
    of the base fertiliser? Thanks a million.[]

    That's quite a deep tank! Can reach the back of the tank?

    3x3x3 is about 200gal. Using the rule of thumb of 2W/gal, you will probably need 400W of light. MH lights would be best for your type of tank. FL or PL may not be able to reach the depth of 3ft.

    Hi bclee, this is a deep tank, I thought of
    using 5 sets of 36watt X 2 PL lights (per set)
    would this be enough for the lights to penetrate
    all the way down for the foreground plant?
    I've calculated the total volume of the water
    to be at 729 litres.

    I am not too sure whether PL will work. Some of the guys may have experience with deep tanks.

    Why not MH?

    If you are concern about heat, 10 PL lights also generate lots of heat.

    Can also consider these sites:

    Just as 2W/g is also a guideline.

    Depending on your choice of plants, you can go up to 3W/G or more. Not a good idea to exceed 4W/G.

    Base fert... normally, about 1 to 2 inches in front slope to about 3 to 4 inches in the back. Depends on your plants and layout. Big plants with big root systems need thicker base fert. Smaller plants don't need so much.

    Recently read in TheKrib, a discussion about depth and lights. Specifically, read this article.

    3'x3'x3' = 206g or 764 litres.
    2W/g ==> 413W
    3W/g ==> 619W
    3W/g ==> 826W

    Must go for MH lights already.
    Also, 3' deep is quite challenging to do planting. Have you considered making it a terrarium?

    Hi Juggler, 3ft depth is a challenge for me. I would like to create a more 3-D effect as wider & deeper tank will give a more abyss kind of feeling

    Dun think you can use FL/PL as the penetration will be insufficient. Go for MH.....

    Juz my opinion.
