    Hi all,

My sunset platy sank to the bottom of the tank for a day so I thought she might be going to give birth but her tummy is totally flat. Anyway, I just put her in the breeding tank (with sections).
After 5-6 hours, I saw little balls of platy fry. They are fertilised as I can see a pair of eyes in each of the balls, however they are not moving. The mother fish is still sinking to the bottom of the breeding tank (more babies???)

Will the "eggs" ever hatch if i wait long enough? or should I discard them?
I have never noticed my sunset platy being pregnant. They don't look fat and their babies are orangey so it is difficult to see any black spot near its tail.... May I know how to see if the sunset platies are pregnant?
(for my emerald platy it is rather obvious when it is pregnant. grows really fat n you can see a black spot near the tail...)

Hope someone with relevant experience can shed some light on this thanks
    I love my fishes.

I have experienced cases where female livebearer gave birth with there was no male fish in the tank. One suspicion was that the subject was impregnated before it reached the shop which I brought it from.

As these fishes are livebearers, they don't lay eggs. If you get eggs instead of fishes, it would well be they will not become fry.

Do keep us updated on the development.

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

Agree with Interestor, premature birth due to shock.

Healthy frys should be free-swimming upon birth.

Sorry to say that those little ones got little to no chance of survival.

    Cheers,
Livebearers have the ability to store sperm to spawn a few batches of fries so you might get a few batches of fries even if you have no males in the tank. Very efficient fishes.
    Yours Truly, Avan

I went into the woods because I wanted to live deliberately. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life... to put to rout all that was not life; and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.
