    Hi guys,

Just want to find out how often you guys clean your filters?
And how often do you change the various types of filter media?

I have Ehiem Eccos filtering each of my 3.5 ft planted tanks and they get really icky in about 2 weeks. Lots rotting matrial inside. Furthermore, the EhfiStrat and EhfiMech gets a reddish tint on it, especilly when I use iron fert regularly. I have to change/wash the filter floss and rinse the filter out every 2 weeks or so.

Okay for me rinse filters(6 of them mind you!![])every 2 months including changing the filter wool. clean impeller and chamber as well.

change of bio media every year by 2/3 for two months and the balance of 1/3 on the third....I am currently using the biohome glass thingy[:]

my 2226 have not change any media for about 2 years already.
not even the wool except spray wash every 2 months.

and in those 2 years, i kept 6 ranchus.
don't think there is any rules governing this.
depends on bioload, water and fish conditions?

I know there's no hard and fast rule, but I'm just wondering if every 2 weeks might indicate something wrong with my planted tanks.

I have south african cichlid tank with no plants. Thats filter pretty much stays clean and I have to clean it out for months.

I have had these tanks for about 8 months. The filters get clogged up about every 2 weeks or so and I have to clean them out.

The water was clear and algae was under control for a long time. Plants grow like crazy (too many stemmed plants). Fishes were ok, but bloat would claim 1 or 2 of them every few weeks or so. About a month ago all the fishes started dying out really quick to bloat. Left with 2 neons (from 50) n 1 danio (10). Otos, cory and yamatos were unscath. So I decided to redo the whole tank.

Anyway, last week I pulled out the plants, trimmed off dying and algaed parts, cleaned the walls, vacuumed the gravel, change 60% water and planted new and remaining plants. So far so good, but its too early to tell.

This time round I'm going to make more effort to vacumn out debris. Also installed a skimmer, and a permanent CO2 indicator. Gonna monitor the water closer too. Impatiently waiting for a few more weeks before I add more fish. Thinking of a getting pearl gouramis and rams. Plus a farlowella, a few more cories and a platoon of yamatos, maybe a few pencil fish too.
