the 420, 430, 550 and 580 can be used as wireless slave. however, you need a wireless trigger ST-E2 to be mounted on the camera hot shoe. alternatively a 550 or 580 can also act as a wireless master when mounted on the hot shoe.
Which Canon speedlite model that will allow me to use without cable? Is the cable called "off camera shoe cable"? How much does it cost? I'm making flash light box for my tank.
Any idea how much those off camera shoe cable (assuming correct name )?
I do not understand those terminology yet, so even though I can search on the net but not sure what to look for
Thanks

Does it mean that flash it self do not build in wireless trigger capability? Need to add ST-E2.
What is wireless master? Does it mean but it can control other flash to fire? I assume 550/580 it self still need to add ST-E2 to connect it with the camera for wireless trigger
here's what the ST-E2 mounted on a 20D hot shoe looks like.
this unit will trigger any of the wireless capable speedlites (i.e. 420, 430, 550, 580) e.g. here you can see two 550EX placed over a photo tank.
if you have two wireless capable speedlites, one of which is the 550/580, then you can use the 550/580 in its wireless master mode, without having to use an ST-E2. this means that the master 550/580 will be mounted on the hot shoe in place of the ST-E2, and the remaining speedlites (can be any number of them) will be commanded by this wireless master.

How about other model like 220ex, 380ex is there any wireless add on? instead of using hot shoe cable or what ever you call it
already said you need 4xx and 5xx.

sorry what I mean is, is there such thing as transmiter and receiver tinggy which is connected to the camera as well as flash and acting as wireless trigger? wireless shoe?
St-E2 should be in the region of 200ish

unca choy,
when the flash are used as masters will they flash too?
i ask because this may cause a reflection on the front of the tank glass...
so can they be made to just act like a ST-E2 and not flash?

actually the ST-E2 also flash, but very weak and covered by the red panel. in some cases you can catch the red flash from the ST-E2 on your front glass.

You got a point there
Can it be turn off? how does all bro here taking the tank photo? do you block the build in flash with something? but by doing so does it make the E-TTL calculation wrong?
Why don't they use RF (radio frequency) signal with uniq code so that does not cause other peoples flash to fire? or maybe IR (infra red)
RF cost more. the ST-E2 and speedlites can handle up to 4 groups within the local vicinity.

Many of us with the Canon setup all have the ST-E2. The one thing that's a saviour for tank and aquatic photography.
RF is one technology higher than IR, so it will be more expensive.
Moreover, the ST-E2 and flash can be separated into 3 groups via channels 1, 2, and 3. And then there are groupings of the flash into Group A and B so that you can put ratios in their flash power.
Vincent, it supports 4 channels and 2 groups.
means 4 separate ST-E2/5xx-masters can operate in the same vicinity, and each ST-E2/5xx-masters can control 2-3 groups (ST-E2 only A:B, 5xx-masters can handle A, B and C).

Oh yah. Its four channels and 2 groups for the ST-E2. Seldom used till channel 4. Worse situation I had was 3 person shooting in the same room.
so one of the reason to use a 5xx as master is that it can handle 3 groups.

Pardon my question, I'm quite new to Canon, but can't Canon cameras itself (say the 400D) act as a commander without having the ST-E2 mounted?

just wondering is there any web site that describe E-TTL sinal/format and hot shoe connection?
I got a feeling that it can be DIY, not easy but possible.
By the way I notice that buying flash online, Amazon for example, including overseas delivery cost is cheaper/same price than buying second hand at clubSNAP. Does the shop in Singapore sell more expensive?
