Wanted to try to use US Fissiden as carpet lawn for 3ft tank. Is it suitable for creeping lawn? Is it easy to stay short in low-tech tank without co2 and strong light and not requiring regular trimming? I'd like something neat and low maintenance and looks nice.

I have tried regular java and spiky moss and those get out of control after a few months.

I share your view that USF is a nice plant but I cannot figure how you're going to lay it as a lawn? Thru mesh? Firstly it cannot be too dense as it's light requirement is on the high side and bottom ones will wilt and die if they cannot get the light. Secondly, it grows at a very slow rate. To get it thick & lushy will take a long long time.

Just my noobie 2 cents worth. Lets hear it from the other brudders before you decide.

yup, they have c02 running there, in fact i find bioplast's plants grow very well, most of their tanks using chiller though.

High light with no co2 injection?? wah.... good luck... asking for algae problems.

Low light with no co2 injection... now that is possible..

Like what Justin said, High light with no Co2 and no dosing (cos you wanted low maintenance)... can result in major algae problems.

I would rather take the route of using low light, no Co2 with USF first before trying the high lights

I think he mentioned 'tank without CO2 and strong light'.

Pretty easy to achieve. Just need to tie a thin layer of US Fissidens and wait for compact growth.
However, it does take a bit of time to achieve a lawn for a low-tech setup. And you better not have any fish that will disturb it. Otherwise, it will never grow well.

In fact, I already tried and it's proven to work. One of my 3ft tank now has a full lawn of just US Fissidens. Just keeps growing and growing in high or low light.
Justin has seen it since he collected some US Fissidens from me just a couple of months ago.

Will do that when I have the time to snap a few shots. You should probably see it in the marketplace when I do so anyway.

if you want nice us fissiden lawn, cold temperature is the key to sucess. they love cold water. keep it at 24-27 degress. they grow best under such condition. Of couse co2 and high lightings as well.

Do they grow tall and thick? Or short and compact?

I tried APP as a lawn before, the start was good and flat but as they grew dense, the bottom yellowed and wither.

Anyone with pictures to show will be good. I'm thinking of doing the same to my 3 feet shrimps tank. Simple and neat.

hi there, i got a few pictures of how i tie my us fissidens onto mesh but its not very complete, just to show you how you can get fissidens lawn using stainless steel mesh. hope this helps you. I think the shop at boon keng has a tank with fissidens as lawn, you can go check it out.

tying fissidens to mesh using nylon string.

after 2months, thick n lush us fissidens. Note i use a chiller and keep it at 25degrees with co2 injection. If you wan us fissiden lawn you can buy the amount of mesh just enough to cover your foreground.

Actually glosso lawn also very nice.. my old setup! lol..

Is that a 4 ft tank?
Is CO2 very important to us fissidens?
    Thinking low maintainence tanks.
