Cloudy water when reusing ADA substrate

    Hey guys,

I decided to drain my whole 2 feet tank and rescape it. I am currently using the ADA substrate and I have realized that there are plenty of sediments on the soil. Its like the slightest disturbance of the soil will create aplenty of dust and sediments that will cloud the water badly. I left it overnight but the water's still pretty cloudy.

What would be the best way to clear the cloudiness? I was thinking of getting a new pack of ADA substrate (amazonia) and put it over the current layer to suppress the sediments. Is that viable?

Oh and I am running an external Ehiem canister currently to filter the water (but it looks like there is no effect).

    Any inputs are greatly appreciated!

I suggest a 50% water change followed by 1-2 30% change after 3 days to see if it happens. Your water wil stili be slightly cloudy for 2-3 weeks due to reset of filter and bb almost killed.

As for the dust or sediments, no worries, they will disappear eithe with help of filter or nature decomposition. I done similar major scaping using ada soil like this 3 times before.

Thanks for the quick reply. My friend has suggested that I get some water purifier (aka alum?) to corrugate the sediments up. Will that be an idea?

Also, is turning the filter off for some moment better for the sediments to settle?

    Thanks

You can do so if there is not any fishes or esp. shrimps yet. I have a bottle of ADA super clear which is very effective (left 50&#37 which I used before during initial setup to clear cloudy water. PM me if you need.

Hey thanks! I actually got a bottle of Seachem Clarity yesterday. But I still have not seen any effect. There's still like a slight haze.

Your soil have broken down. Best is to top up with a new layer. Alternatively, what i did was to get a external filter, fill it to the brim with lots of wool and nothing else, run it for 2 weeks. My tank was cleared after that.

the cloudiness could be due to full water change and the good bio had been killed off

have to be patient for some time for the bio to rebuild back and it should be clear

wonder if uv filter night help in this respect?

The ADA clear super works, it's activated carbon. What you can do is add carbon pads into the filter for a while.

I remember adding ADA clear super and it clear up almost in 3-4hours and total clarity in 7-8hrs.

    Cheers!
