IMHO, in another story to say, if we should put krib which is CA cichlids while apisto is SA cichlds. For me i will never put 2 different location cichlids together into a single tank. Reason being is simple, their needs are totally different.
Aggressive or not doesn't depend on size but more to species and character of that fish. Fish can be small but big in character. So i'll never put 2 different region fish into a same tank.

Issac, abt what you said,
first of all, CAs are a much more compact group ...in terms of bodily and social structures.
SAs in general have a lot more variations...be it body shape, tooth structure, mating patterns etc.
It is safer to cross-apply certain behavioural traits across the entire CA group as compared to SA group.
Which means that behaviour wise, there is a more consistent pattern to be found in CAs compared to SA if you want to separate as a group.
Bene is right abt the fact that it is not desirable to mix fish from too far apart together.
first concern is water chemistry ..(this is actually the easiest area to compromise)
the more difficult part is abt behaviour. As you know, cichlids are big in this aspect. Fish from different localities develop different body language and also change colour in different ways.that is the main concern....miscommunication resulting in more conflicts than needed
abt comparison of aggression, it is more an issue of other factors like tank size, tank setups, tankmates.
it is really hard to pull a yardstick and compare across the board...coz they behave very differently in different situations .
and one small correction, bene, the krib is from west africa [:]
