Best price for the ST-E2 is $273, for 3 pieces. Not that fantastic discount.
Macro lighting? Is it the ring light?
I go to MS Color at AMK. Checked the prices at some other shop,
prices quite similar. But MS got a nice sales girl...........

I'm thinking more on the two flashes that mount to the side of the lens rather than ring light. But then again, I think I'll save up some money first.

So when can we go shooting again?? Gosh, I really need to stop shooting and take some time to organize my shots first. Still got tons from Penang trip that I haven't post.

Richard, thanks for the effort. Like you said, price quoted not really far from walk in price of S$280. Maybe they will consider to reduce more for at least 10 pieces MO. Stuff at MS are reasonably priced. There is one MS at AMK Hub and do you mean this or the other branch?

Canon Speedlite 420EX is good enough for small tank photogrphy. use the 550EX if you do shoot subject in 2 to 2.5 ft deep tanks sometimes.

    Rationalisation:

    2 X used 550EX = S$400 X 2 (current used street price)
    3 X used 420EX = S$260 X 3 (current used street price)

You get an additional light source instead for additional placement or fill. No extra cost.

Aquarium photography is slightly different from traditional photography in the way we prioritise our equipment needs (which is also dependent on the aquatic subjects, e.g. fish, tanks). If you understand that you want to achieve, it's easy to build a system that will grow with you along the way with minimum depreciation (exception being the camera body).

    Cheers,
I have dwarf cichlids in my tanks! Do you?

Yeah that is the plan, not so soon though.

Benny, does it mean few smaller flash is better that one big flash? Flash placement seem to be important, is there any general rule for it?

he means more (read "more than 10") big flash is better than one big flash

seriously, get the largest flash you can afford because you never know when you need the power.

here's my experience, or lack of, in buying the equipment.
it goes in order of purchase.

    1) Canon 350D w/ grip, used
    2) speedlite 580EX, new grey set
    3) canon lens 100mm macro, used

very very frustrating at this point....
i've got all the basic equipment but can't do much (missing ST-E2).

    4) ST-E2, new thanks to arrangment of a kind forum member in a mini-MO

went for a photo shoot of new apistos at biotope.
at this point you realize what benny is trying to say about flashES...

    5) speelite 420EX x pcs, used
    6) tripod w/o head..., used

so here i am now... but my purchases are quite far from over...
    current to get list follows:

    a) tripod head
    b) cheapo stand/tripod for flash x 2 pcs
    c) angle viewfinder for odd angles/height shots
    d) lord knows what i'll think of next from here... but i dont think its the end of the list!
