Hi experts, would like to ask what do you think of Canon Speedlite 420EX flash. Personally, I don't like to use flash and will get a cheap one just for aquatic photography

Does 420EX comes with a cable so that I am able to position the flash away from the camera or do I need a flash transmitter? (if the answer is later, another sum of $ )

As it is a low end model, is 420 EX ignites enough intensity for a decent aquatic shot?

I'm not expert, actually I just got my DSLR a week or two weeks ago. Currently I'm also looking for flash, and I can tell you that it does not come with cable, need to buy your own cable, if I'm not mistaken around $90 .

If I'm not mistaken 420EX can be control using wireless transmitter (ST-E2) cost about $280. So if you want to use cable, can try 380EX no wireless support though.

Ok thanks Robert. I will consider getting the cable as I only use exterior flash at home.

$280 is the cost of the transmitter not the flash, my previous sentence may confuse you .

Ya, I was considering between S$280 for transmitter which I don't usually use and a cable of S$90.

The advantage of a wireless transmitter is that you don't have to tangle with the cable. For cable you have to secure the flash properly or a slight pull might cause the flash to drop.

I have used the Canon speedlite 420EX previously. It's a very good buy now in the used market. However, it's effectiveness will depend on how your shots are setup and the shooting conditions. Don't expect too much spread unless you position it higher, which will reduce the intensity of the light.

I think richard's recommendation for a wireless transmitter is very good. for an extra S$190, you have a world of added convenience.

Thanks Benny for the advice. Just received a quote from Bargaincity for ST-2 and it remains at S$280. Now thinking hard...

If it's any consolation, I bought it for S$390 when it just came out. Never regreted paying for it. When others were struggling with aquatic photography, my keep rate was already very high.

By the way, I have both the cord and the ST-E2. You can try if you like. Here, we share.

    poisoned!

btw i'm an ex-victim, albeit a willing one.
got the ST-E2 with advice from benny.
though i haven't shot much as my planted tank dreams turned out otherwise.
i find it very useful to take fish shots too.
    specifically for pleco overhead shots.
just put the photo-tank in between two 420EXs and shot away.

Thats a great idea to mass-poison. So those who intend to shoot fish and aquatic it's a great chance not to be missed.

By the way i'm using 2 x 420EX it's great for photo size tank.
    Cheers!

    Cheers,
Wow! price drop so much. I just bought a used Speedlite EX420 from snaphot B&S for S$250. Just want to get a cheap flash and previous owner hardly used it. Retail shops mostly do not sell this model anymore. Min entry level EX430, price range S$420-S$475.

No problem Richard! When you get 1, number 2 will come really soon! If you're taking apisto pictures a 3 way flash top left right will do great!

I see that this poison is like apisto... bad bug. No matter what version of self control you have you'll fall for it
    Cheers!
