when a apisto turns black/dark, it means that they r under stress.. pls ensure that yr water parameter is suitable for them (below PH 7).. oso perharps they r getting bullied by some of the tank mates.. observe them

Are there any other tank mates in the tank?
Water parameters hope to get some info.
did you dump the fish strg inside the tank?

    I still believe it's shock.
    Cheers!

Tank mate only Rasbora and tetra and Ballon Ram.

Maybe the shock is from my baby as he will "roller-skate" the child walker and bang into the cabinet.

Will do some water monitoring tonight and do some water change

i also notice my female apisto seems to have a rather dark coloration, esp when the male harasses her, her black lateral line and the line on her face will darken, sometimes when she's left alone, her body color is between slight tinge of yellow to beige to light brown...would leaving the light off more and adding black water extract help? i beleve my water params are ok cept tt i can't bring my ph below 7,the black water extract doesn't seem to help in bring it down either...

I think it's due to the knocking of the cabinet that results in shock on the apisto.

Black water extract doesn't really help bring the PH down . You can really relax on this issue on bringing the PH lower then 7. aga don't really fancy in terms of water parameters.
    Cheers!

I tot BW extracts will bring down the pH. To a certain level, it will soften the water too. Is this information correct?
    Cheers!!

Softening the water i'm sure it does , bringing down the PH abit useless..IMHO

think you may want to check your KH level of your tap water.....persistance high PH is usually due to high KH level.

the local tap waters are usually in the range from pH6 to pH 8. more or less okay for normal aquarium use without the extra chems to adjust the water values. my fish are doing just fine with normal tap water plus abit of tetra aquasafe. but i think if u just place a piece of driftwood in there it will slowly lower the pH by itself. once u allow the water to start turning a brown tan then u know u've got acidic aquarium water
    Fish.. Simply Irresistable
    Back to Killies... slowly.

Sherwin, when i had my amazon tank, i used blackwater extract, and it did indeed bring the pH level down, and soften the water...
